Multistate Essay Examination (MEE)

Day 1 • 30% of Score

Six essay questions testing your ability to analyze fact patterns and apply law. One question per subject, with 30 minutes per essay.

Core Subjects (always tested):

Constitutional Law
Contracts
Criminal Law & Procedure
Evidence
Real Property
Torts
Civil Procedure
Business Associations

Note (July 2026 Update): Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts & Estates, and Secured Transactions have been removed from the MEE as of July 2026. Focus on the core 8 subjects above.

MEE Study Tips:

  • ✏️
Practice Under Timed Conditions: Set a timer for 30 minutes per essay to simulate exam conditions. Speed and accuracy are equally important.
  • 📋
Master the IRAC Format: Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion. Examiners reward clear issue spotting and logical application of law.
  • 🔍
Spot All Issues: MEE questions test your ability to identify multiple legal issues within one fact pattern. Don't stop at the obvious one.
  • 💼
Study NCBE Model Answers: Review official NCBE sample essays and model answers to understand what successful responses look like.

Multistate Performance Test (MPT)

Day 1 • 20% of Score

Two practical legal tasks testing your ability to work with real-world legal documents. 90 minutes total (45 minutes per task).

Common Task Types:

Memo to File
Client Letter
Contract Draft
Brief/Motion
Closing Argument
Negotiation

MPT Study Tips:

  • 📑
Read Instructions First: Carefully review what document type is requested and what specific issues to address. This directs your entire response.
  • 📚
Use Provided Materials: All information needed is in the library and client file. You're testing document analysis, not external knowledge.
  • ⚖️
Follow Legal Writing Conventions: Use proper letter/memo formats, cite the provided authorities, and organize logically for reader comprehension.
  • Allocate Time Wisely: Spend 5-10 minutes reviewing materials, 5 minutes outlining, 25+ minutes drafting, and 5 minutes proofreading.

Multistate Bar Exam (MBE)

Day 2 • 50% of Score

200 multiple choice questions covering seven core subjects. 6 hours total (3 hours per session of 100 questions).

Tested Subjects:

Constitutional Law
Contracts
Criminal Law & Procedure
Evidence
Real Property
Torts
Civil Procedure

MBE Study Tips:

  • 🎯
Target 60%+ Accuracy: A passing score typically requires 60-70% correct answers (120-140 out of 200). Focus on consistent improvement across all subjects.
  • 📊
Track Your Weak Spots: Use practice test analytics to identify which subjects and question types give you trouble. Spend extra time there.
  • 🤔
Eliminate Wrong Answers: Process of elimination is your friend. Even if you're unsure, eliminating clearly wrong answers improves your odds.
  • ⏲️
Pace Yourself: You have roughly 1.8 minutes per question. Don't get stuck on one question; move on and come back if time permits.
  • 🔄
Take Full Practice Tests: Take at least 5-10 full-length practice tests under timed conditions. This builds stamina and identifies timing issues.
